Power Cord Questions

What kind of power cord does the PS4 use?

Both the PS4 and the PS4 Pro use an AC power cord. The styles needed are slightly different depending on the model of your console. The PS4 uses a figure 8 style, while the PS4 Pro requires a more boxy style plugin. Some have a NEMA 5-15 plug on one end (designed to fit into a 120V outlet). There are also versions of the PS4 that come with the two-prong NEMA 1-15 plug, however, that is uncommon.

Both cords are the same cord a lot of electronics use (TVs, Consoles…).

How much power does a PS4 need?

A PS4 needs between 165 watts and 310 watts. Every version of the PS4 has different power needs. The PS4 Slim needs 165W, the original PS4 needs 250W max, while the PS4 Pro needs 310W max.

How to replace the PlayStation 4 power cord?

To replace the PlayStation 4 power cord you just need to unplug it from the console. Pull the cord straight back from the console, making sure it is straight so you don’t damage the console’s port.

Will a universal power cord work on PS4?

A universal power cord should work as long as the plug fits your PS4. You could always check the specs. But in most cases, if it’s a figure 8 plug and it fits it will work.

How many volts can a PS4 handle?

The voltage that a PS4 can handle depends on the model of the PS4. Some are designed to run on 120V AC power some can take up to 240V AC. Generally speaking, a PS4 should be able to handle a voltage range of 100-240V without any problems.

However, it’s always a good idea to check the specifications of your particular PS4 model to be sure.

Can you run a PS4 on 12v?

No, it is not possible to run a PS4 on a 12V power source. The PS4 requires a standard 120V AC power outlet to function properly. Attempting to use a 12V power source would not provide enough power to the PS4, and could potentially damage the console.

PlayStation 4 Models

Are all PS4 power cords the same?

No, not all PS4 cables are the same. There are differences between (regular, slim, and pro) models, but also there are differences in series. Two regular PS4s can have different cords because one came out before the other.

What is the difference between PS4 models?

The different models of the PS4 series have some significant differences worth knowing about. The PS4 and PS4 Slim are somewhat similar. The Slim is a sleeker model that uses less electricity than the regular PS4. The PS4 Pro, however, has significantly more processing power (needs more power). It is designed to use with a 4K TV for a superior visual and functional experience.

Does the PS4 need a power brick?

No, the PlayStation 4 uses an integrated power brick.

Is the PS4 European power cord different from the US cable?

Most likely yes, in Europe they use the two-prong (not flat prongs) plug. Always check the standard plugs in whatever country you are going to, the good news is the cord itself is pretty standard so finding a replacement won’t be hard.

Do PS4 Pro and PS4 use the same cables?

No, the PS4 and PS4 pro don’t use the same power cords. The PS4 and PS4 slim use the Figure-8 cable, and the PS4 pro uses a standard “monitor power cord” (for the lack of a better name).

Do PS4 and PS4 Slim use the same power cord?

Yes, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 slim use the same power cord.

Did Sony use the same power cord for PS1, 2, 3, and 4?

No, Sony didn’t use the same cable for every PlayStation. The PS3 originally came with a different power cord than the PS4. The PS1 and PS2 also use a different power cord than the PS4.

The power cords for the PS1 and PS2 are slightly different in shape from the power cord for the PS4, so you cannot use the older cables with a PS4. However, the power cord for the PS4 is compatible with the PS1 and PS2, so you can technically use the PS4’s power cord with them. Though it is risky.

PS4 Cord Not Working

How do I know if my PS4 power cord is bad?

Start by visually inspecting the cable for damage (dirt or moisture on the ends, tears in the jacket, bent or broken prongs). Then if you have a multimeter you can check the cable to see if it conducts correctly. If you find nothing the best step might be to buy a new one.

Why is my power cord loose?

There are two reasons for the cord to be loose. Most likely it’s the cord, it could be the wrong plug, or perhaps it was tarnished from plugging/unplugging. Or the more concerning one, it’s the console that is damaged.

Make sure you pushed the cord all the way in.

Can I shave my cord plug to fit in my PS4?

The question isn’t can you, it’s should you. And the answer is you shouldn’t. The cons outweigh the pros, from destroying your console, starting a fire, or straight up killing yourself. You should just get a new cord.

If I unplugged my PS4 while it still had the solid yellow light (rest mode) on, can it damage the PS4?

Yes, it can damage the console. The PS4 it self has warnings on not to unplug when the console is in rest mode. Even if there is no hardware damage, you can still lose data and mess up the software side of things. So just don’t unplug your console while its resting (or the yellow light is on).
